The Production Payroll Accountant is responsible for managing the day-to-day payroll process for animated television productions, ensuring crew members are paid accurately, timely, and in accordance with applicable union agreements, company policies, and California labor requirements.
This role works closely with Production Finance, Production Management, Human Resources, and the production’s payroll/Employer of Record (EOR) provider to manage timecards, employee payroll setup, payroll changes, union requirements, and payroll reporting throughout the lifecycle of a production.
The ideal candidate has hands-on entertainment production payroll experience, strong attention to detail, and an understanding of the unique payroll requirements associated with television animation. This is a non-union role. TV Animation experience preferred.
Production Payroll
Manage weekly production payroll for animation crew across assigned productions.
Review and audit employee timecards for accuracy, completeness, approvals, and appropriate coding.
Track missing or late timecards and work directly with employees and management to resolve discrepancies.
Verify rates, start dates, job classifications, work locations, production entities, and other payroll information prior to processing.
Review payroll edits and payroll registers prior to final approval.
Research and resolve payroll discrepancies, adjustments, retroactive payments, and corrections.
Maintain accurate payroll records and supporting documentation.
Enter all start paperwork into the payroll system.
Track employee starts, changes, hiatuses, and terminations throughout production.
Union & Compliance
Apply applicable collective bargaining agreement requirements, including wage scales, overtime, meal penalties, holidays, and other contractual provisions.
Support payroll for employees covered by agreements including The Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839), IATSE/MPEG Local 700, SAG-AFTRA, and other applicable unions or guilds.
Monitor employee classifications and rates to support compliance with union agreements and production requirements.
Assist with payroll-related union reporting, pension, health and welfare, and other required fringe reporting.
Maintain compliance with State wage-and-hour requirements and company payroll policies.
Production Accounting & Reporting
Ensure payroll is coded accurately to the appropriate production, episode, department, account, and cost center.
Prepare and maintain weekly payroll reconciliations.
Reconcile payroll reports to production accounting records and identify discrepancies.
Provide payroll data and reporting to Production Accountants for cost reporting and forecasting.
Assist with payroll accruals and outstanding payroll estimates for period-end and production cost reporting.
Maintain organized payroll documentation for audits and production wrap.
Support Production Finance with payroll-related research and reporting as requested.
Employee & Production Support
Serve as a primary point of contact for production crew regarding payroll questions.
Partner with Production Management to resolve timecard, rate, coding, and approval issues.
Coordinate with Animops and payroll/EOR partners on employee changes and payroll matters.
Communicate payroll deadlines and requirements clearly to production teams.
Handle sensitive employee and compensation information with discretion and confidentiality.
